MARTÍN GÓMEZ THE ELDER (1503/1504-1562), HOLY FAMILY WITH ST JOHN THE BAPTIST AND ST ELIZABETH, OIL ON PANEL, UNFRAMED
Martín Gómez the Elder (1503/1504-1562) was an artist of the Cuenca school of painting, a medieval town in La Mancha that was one of the main artistic centres of the Iberian High Renaissance. Born in nearby San Clemente, he moved to Cuenca and joined the studio of the painter Gonzalo de Castro following his marriage to his daughter, Catalina de Castro, in 1526. His arrival coincided with the period of activity in the same city of the painter Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina (c. 1475-1537), who, along with Fernando Llanos (c. 1505-1525), has come to be known to art historians as the 'Hernandos', whose work was heavily marked by the precepts of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).
Gómez, who took over the family studio after the death of his father-in-law in 1535, drew on these lessons to open up local painting to these new influences. The Holy Family shown here, an unpublished work by the Spanish painter, is deeply indebted to the Hernandos tradition. The gestures and position of the Child Jesus, embracing the young Saint John the Baptist dressed in a tunic made of camel hair, are reminiscent of those of Christ in the Madonna of the Yarnwinder (private collection), painted by Leonardo da Vinci and his workshop around 1501.
The lessons he learned from looking to Italy would continue to flourish after the death of Gómez the Elder under the brush of his son, Gonzalo Gómez (1531-1585), and his grandsons, Juan Gómez (d. 1597) and Martín Gómez the Younger (active 1578 and 1611).
