Master Humphrey's Clock, first edition in book form

Charles Dickens, 1840-41

DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Master Humphrey’s Clock. London and Whitefriars: Bradbury & Evans, 1840-41.

The Manney copy of first edition in book form. The published form of this work was an experimental attempt by the author, who feared that readers had become tired of stories in monthly issues. Dickens proposed in a letter to Chapman & Hall, “To introduce a little club or knot of characters and to carry their personal histories and proceedings through the work; to introduce fresh characters constantly;…and to vary the form of the papers by throwing them into sketches, letters from imaginary correspondents, and so forth, to vary the contents as much as possible.” Eckel, 69; Podeschi/Gimbel A51.

Three volumes, quarto. Frontispieces in each volume, numerous wood-engravings in the text by George Cattermole and Hablot K. Browne (thumbing, some toning to edges). Original brown cloth with gilt stamped spine and gilt vignette featuring clock marking the time corresponding to each volume, red-speckled edges, yellow coated endpapers in all three volumes (light wear on edges, some small stains on vol. III). Quarter morocco slipcase with chemises. Provenance: Richard Manney (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby’s New York 11 October 1991, lot 84).
