Max Klinger, who worked as a graphic artist, painter and sculptor, is one of the most significant artistic personalities of the late German 19th century. His sculptural works earned him a reputation as the German Rodin.
Klinger's sculptural imagery is characterised by a further development of the reception of antiquity during neoclassicism. The re-evaluation of antiquity takes up the new findings of late 19th century archaeology, which manifests itself in his sculptures. "The Bathing Woman" combines various narrative moments: the sculptor presents the young woman in an all-view perspective that opens up new spheres depending on the point of view.
