Maximilian von Geer war kurfürstlicher Truchseß (oberster Aufseher über die fürstliche Tafel) am Münchner Hof und zugleich Maler. Als solcher spezialisierte er sich auf das Anfertigen vorzüglicher Miniaturen, um 1730 schuf er Ansichten wittelsbachischer Schlösser für das Miniaturenkabinett der Reichen Zimmer in der Münchner Residenz. Hierbei dienten ihm die bekannten Gemälde von Franz Joachim Beich, die sich in der Nördlichen Galerie des Schlosses Nymphenburg befinden, als Vorlagen.

Auch für die beiden vorliegenden Miniaturen orientierte man sich an zwei Gemälden Franz Joachim Beichs, nämlich den beiden Supraportgemälden der Nördlichen Galerie mit den Darstellungen der Pagoden- und der Badenburg. Diese Gemälde entstanden noch zu Lebzeiten des Kurfürsten Max Emanuel von Bayern (1662-1726). Max Emanuel hatte sich in Nymphenburg von Joseph Effner drei "maisons de plaisance" errichten lassen: Pagodenburg (1716-19), Badenburg (1718-1721) und eine Eremitage (Magdalenenklause, 1725-28). So wie man in der Nördlichen Galerie von Schloss Nymphenburg stolz Joachim Franz Beichs Ansichten der wittelsbachischen Schlösser im großen Format präsentierte, so wollte man im kleinen Format dann bereits unter der Regierung des neuen Kurfürsten Karl Albrecht (1697-1745) mit von Geers Miniaturen im Miniaturenkabinett der Residenz renommieren. Dieses Miniaturenkabinett stellt den letzten Raum der Reichen Zimmer dar und war aufgrund seiner exponierten Lage protokollarisch nur einem kleinen Kreis von Besuchern zugänglich.

Beide Ansichten zeigen die Pagoden- und die Badenburg mit den ihnen vorgelagerten großartigen Gartenparterres, die im Wesentlichen der Pariser Gartenarchitekt Dominique Girard entworfen hatte und welche bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts erhalten blieben. Sie fielen erst Friedrich Ludwig von Sckells Umgestaltung eines großen Teils des Gartens in einen englischen Landschaftsgarten zum Opfer.

Maximilian von Geers Miniaturen in der Münchner Residenz sind in Gouache auf Pergament gemalt, das Pergament wurde auf Messingplatten aufgezogen. Die Maße der Messingplatten im Miniaturenkabinett entsprechen den Maßen der vorliegenden Platten. Neben der künstlerischen Qualität rechtfertigt auch dieser technische Aspekt die Zuschreibung der vorliegenden Miniaturen an Maximilian von Geer.
