Lot 137 | Meissen figure of Maria Immaculata
Meissen, 2nd half 20th century, after a design by Johann Joachim Kaendler c. 1738, porcelain, polychrome painted and gold painted, mounted on an ebonised wooden base, height approx. 47 cm (with base), manufactory mark on the reverse, condition B, cross in the hand of the Christ Child broken off, certificate from Franzen, Düsseldorf from 2006 enclosed. Crescent moon Madonna stepping on a dragon and thus triumphing over the evil in the world and original sin. The impressive small sculpture was originally intended as an altarpiece for Empress Wilhelmine Amalia of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1673-1742) in Vienna. A mould was delivered to Brühl Palace for Clemens August I Duke of Bavaria, Archbishop of Cologne. Erich Honecker presented a mould of this Mother of God to Pope John Paul II.
