70-летие И.А. Крылова отмечалось 2 февраля 1838 г. в зале Дворянского собрания на Невском. В торжестве участвовало более 300 человек. С речами выступили главный распорядитель торжества А.Н. Оленин, В.А. Жуковский, министр внутренних дел Д.Н. Блудов, граф В.Ф. Одоевский и другие. Меню обеда включало: Демьянову уху, Суп жульен, Крыловскую кулебяку и пирожки, Майонез из дичи, Ростбиф, Форель под шампиньонами, Рябчиковые филеи на трюфеле, Спаржу, Жаркое-пулярды и рябчиков, Салат, Желе из Vin de Cap, Десерт.
Иван Андреевич Крылов (1769—1844) — публицист, баснописец, поэт, издатель сатирико-просветительских журналов. Более всего известен как автор 236 басен, вышедших в девяти прижизненных изданиях (с 1809 по 1843 г.). Наряду с оригинальными эта часть творческого наследия Крылова составлена переработанными сюжетами басен Лафонтена (который, в свою очередь, заимствовал их у Эзопа, Федра и Бабрия). Многие выражения из басен Крылова стали крылатыми.
