Lot 530 | Miquel Barceló (1957 Felanitx) und Evgen Bavcar (1946 Lokavec)
Miquel Barceló (1957 Felanitx) and Evgen Bavcar (1946 Lokavec)
El Libro de Los Ciegos, publisher's slipcase with ribbon fastening, 81 plates, including 48 lithographs and 33 embossings, 40 x 33 x 7.5 cm book dimensions, signed, dated 1993, numbered 42/50, Paris Item, minimal rubbing and foxing in places, stains on the underside, small scratches in places on the slipcase. A book with lithographs for blind people. Barceló planned to have the text printed in Braille to complement his illustrations, most of which are designed in relief or tactile. Through the art publisher Item, he met the blind French-Slovenian philosopher Evgen Bavcar, whose work with writing and photography explores visual perception and the relationship between image and text. The result of their collaboration, the Book of the Blind (Libros de los Ciegos), is a work that can be touched: Barceló's printing plates, some of which are designed in relief, are laid over Bavcar's text printed in Braille. Each element of the book was chosen by Barceló to emphasise the experience of touch: the use of a thick varnish applied over some of the illustrations, the choice of watermarked handmade paper and the untrimmed edges.
