Die Schlacht von Belgrad zwischen den habsburgischen und osmanischen Truppen im Sommer 1717. Gegenstücke. Öl / Lwd / Leinwand, eines monogrammiert und undeutlich datiert.

Provenienz: Aus einer bedeutenden süddeutschen Sammlung. Das Gemälde zeigt die Schlacht von Belgrad im Sommer 1717, in der die österreichischen Truppen unter der Leitung von Prinz Eugen von Savoyen die osmanischen Truppen besiegten, die die Stadt eingenommen hatten. Die Festung von Belgrad befand sich zwischen den Flussbiegungen von Save und Donau und war nur von südlicher Richtung aus direkt attackierbar. Durch diese strategisch günstige Lage hatte sie sowohl für die Habsburger wie für die Osmanen eine Schlüsselstellung auf dem Balkan inne. Das erfolgreiche Agieren Prinz Eugens sicherte den Habsburgern zwar nur für kurze Zeit die Kontrolle über den Balkan, trug aber zum Ruhm des Prinzen ganz entscheidend bei; das bis heute überlieferte Volkslied von "Prinz Eugen, dem edlen Ritter" erzählt die Geschichte dieser Schlacht.
