MONTAIGNE, Michel de (1533-1592). Les Essais de Michel seigneur de Montaigne. Edition nouvelle, prise sur l'exemplaire trouvé apres le deceds de l'Autheur, reveu & augmenté d'un tiers outre les precedentes impressions. Paris : Abel l'Angelier, 1598.



Importante édition des Essais. Elle est établie sur l'édition posthume de 1595 dont elle intègre les dernières corrections faites par Marie de Gournay sur l'exemplaire autographe. Elle présente le texte définitif et est préfacée par Marie de Gournay, comme celle de 1595.

Elle présente donc le texte des Essais considéré comme définitif. Il s'agit en outre de la dernière édition à laquelle prit part Marie de Gournay. Lorsqu'Abel l'Angelier imprima cette nouvelle édition corrigée, il décida de la présenter dans un format plus petit et la tira à un plus petit nombre d'exemplaires que celle de 1595. Elle est de ce fait beaucoup plus rare. Le titre est orné d'un bel encadrement gravé sur bois par Jean de Gourmont que l'Angelier avait déjà utilisé dans ses éditions in-4 de 1581-1583.

In-8 (195 x 123 mm). Titre dans un large encadrement gravé. Reliure signée Koehler : maroquin bleu nuit, double filet à froid en encadrement des plats, dos à nerfs, double filet à froid en encadrement des caissons, lettres et tranches dorées (légèrement bruni mais bel exemplaire à marges confortables). Provenance : ex-libris manuscrit au titre indéchiffrable ; Librairie Dommergues (note contrecollée en tête d'ouvrage).

The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
