Further details
A CHARLES II SILVER MONTEITH
MARK OF GEORGES GARTHORNE, LONDON, 1684
plain circular chased with lobes and with crenelated upper rim, engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked underneath
The arms are those of the Hall family, possibly for Sir John Hall of Dunglass, 1st Baronet (1650–1695), a significant figure in 17th-century Scotland. Sir John Hall was a prosperous merchant who held several notable public offices, including that of Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the chief magistrate of the city.
The monteith is a punch bowl with a scalloped rim, designed for rinsing and cooling stemmed glasses. The rim can either be integrated, as in this example, or detachable. This type of punch bowl was introduced in England in the 1680s, and tradition holds that its name derives from "Monsieur Monteigh," a Scottish gentleman who, at that time or slightly earlier, wore a coat with a scalloped edge (see Andrew Clark (ed.), The Life and Times of Anthony Wood, vol. 3, 1894, p. 84).
The earliest known silver example dates from 1684/5, like this one, and was also made by George Garthorne. It is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (No. 390665; see Timothy Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean Museum, 2009, vol. 2, cat. 226, pp. 606-610).
René Boël (1899–1990) was a Belgian industrialist and the founder of the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels.
