A MONUMENTAL ICON OF THE PETCHERSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD (OF THE KIEV CAVES) Russian, circa 1880 Tempera on wood panel. The Mother of God shown enthroned, flanked by Saints Antony and Feodosii of Pechersk and the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The monastic saints are holding unfolded scrolls with the texts of lessons. Executed delicately with ample gold against a punched background, the foliate border emulating contemporary enamelled decoration. Restored. 154 x 99 cm.

Auf ihrem Schoß sitzt aufrecht der Christusknabe, der seine Rechte im Segensgestus erhoben hat. Zur Rechten und zur Linken flankiert von dem heiligen Antoni und dem heiligen Feodosij im Mönchsornat. Hinter dem Thron schließen sich die Erzengel Michael und Gabriel an. Der vergoldete Hintergrund ornamental punziert, der gravierte Rand in Art der zeitgenössischen Cloisonné-Email-Oklade farbig akzentuiert.
