Lot 2167 | Museum Buddha dry lacquer
Myanmar/Burma. 18./19. Century

Dark red dry paint (phaya) with remnants of gilding. Base with wood sealed, top in lacquered wood. Seated in vajrasana on a high Base with the hands in bhumisparsa and dhyana mudra. The hair is designed as a fine lace, the robe in fine Relief indicated by the tail in elegant folds across the left shoulder draped.

In this technique, the figure is formed to a basic shape out of clay on a bamboo frame, only in the lacquer impregnated fabric. The outer shell is stable, is removed, the inner core and this explains the amazing lightness of the finished figure. Buddha in dry lacquer are so far extremely rare in Western collections.
