Musée Français. Recueil des plus beaux tableaux, statues, et bas-reliefs qui existaient au Louvre avant 1815

French Museum. Collection of the most beautiful paintings, statues, and bas-reliefs that
existed in the Louvre before 1815 with explanations of the subjects and historical discourses on painting, sculpture, and engraving, 3 vols. (of 4), author Duchesne Ainé, Paris and London (ca. 1830), 259 full-page plates with reproductions of paintings in etching and copperplate engraving, explanatory text and image commentary, ex libris 'William St. Quintin', red gold-embossed morocco binding, 60 x 46 cm, covers rubbed, inside mostly stained and partially browned on the text pages, plates well preserved within the illustrations. This monumental work is particularly interesting because it also lists the paintings from collections in other European countries that were brought to the Louvre under Napoleon. This extremely ambitious undertaking began in 1803 and continued over several years of the Napoleonic era, during which the compendium was published in numerous fascicles, when all paintings were still considered the property of the French people. This later edition, which uses the original printing plates, already names the rightful owners to whom numerous works had been returned during the Restoration.
