Music
A study group of noted medieval fragments and leaves, in Latin, manuscripts on vellum [Europe, 11th to 14th centuries]
Examples of musical notation in Europe from the 11th to the 14th centuries.

Comprising:
(i) A leaf from an Antiphonal [Italy, c.1100].
c.310 × 210mm. Blind-ruled for 60 lines, in a fine Caroline minuscule hand in black ink, alternating with neums and additions in a small protogothic glossing script, in light brown ink, and a display script of uncials in red ink. Antiphons for the feasts of St Benedict, St Scholastica, and for the feast of the Annunciation (upper and gutter margin cropped, small holes, staining at upper and lower edges).
Provenance: (1) 16th-century inscriptions: Simone Diuanni, Petrus Valorius, Iacopo Galleti, Francesco Guicciardini; (2) Colker MS 124; acquired in 1967 from Renzo Rizzi.

(ii) Two fragments from a noted Breviary [Germany, 12th century].
c.350 × 60mm (each fragment). 2 vertical strips, each preserving part of 30 lines, in Caroline minuscule with neums (creases and light staining from use in a binding). Provenance: Colker MS 142; acquired in 1968 from Maggs.

(iii) A bifolium from a noted Breviary, with neumes [Italy, 12th century].
c.320 × 215mm. 30 lines, blind-ruled, with some lines occupied by neums, written in Caroline minuscule in light brown ink, with both script and initials somewhat undisciplined in aspect (outer margins cropped and torn, vellum stained and cockled, with small wormholes, remains of thread in gutter).
Provenance: (1) Note in margin: "frate andrea [...] de man"; (2) Colker MS 474; acquired in 1997 from Maggs.

(iv) A partial leaf from a noted Breviary [Germany, c.1200].
c.280 × 175mm. Preserving a column of 30 lines and the edge of a second column, ruled in plummet, in a fine protogothic bookhand, with pendrawn initials with ornament; with assorted text and chant from the Book of Job (margins cropped, mild staining of vellum).
Provenance: Colker MS 354; acquired in 1985 from Maggs.

(v) A fragment from a noted Missal [England, 13th century].
c.115 × 115mm. Preserving a column of 18 lines, and the edge of a second column, written in a gothic bookhand, with penwork initials with blue ornament (vellum darkened and stained, with a horizontal crease and small holes).
Provenance: Colker MS 452; acquired in 1993 from Maggs.

(vi) A leaf from a noted Missal [Germany, mid-14th century].
c.315 × 240mm. 2 columns of 34 lines, ruled in plummet, written in a gothic bookhand in brown ink, with musical notation and initials in red and blue ink; the heading "CXXIIII" (text faded on one column of one side from use in a binding).
Provenance: Colker MS 132; acquired in 1967 from Maggs.
