Öl/Leinwand, 80,5 x 138,5 cm, links unten signiert u. datiert C. Länge Jessen Deetzbüll 1877, unsichtbar restauriert - Jessen war erst vor Kurzem aus Hamburg in seine friesische Heimat zurückgekehrt als er die 'Predigt' schuf. Historienbilder sind selten bei Jessen, und das monumentale Gemälde ist ein Hauptwerk des Künstlers. Die Sturmflut vom Februar 1825 hatte auf Hallig Nordstrandischmoor schwere Schäden angerichtet, die Kirche gar völlig zerstört. Das Gottvertrauen des jungen Pastors ist trotzdem ungebrochen, denn er hält den Kelch empor, der wie durch ein Wunder aus den Trümmern geborgen werden konnte. Jessen illustriert die Schlußszene aus J. Chr. Biernatzkys 1836 erschienener literarischer Bearbeitung des Themas. Der theatralische Gestus ist eine Reaktion auf C. F. Lessings epochales Gemälde 'Die Hussitenpredigt'. Wie so oft beschwört Jessen aber auch eine große friesische Vergangenheit, wohl ahnend, daß die Frömmigkeit seiner eigenen Zeitgenossen sich mit der ihrer Vorfahren nicht mehr messen kann. Historien-, Bildnis- u. Interieurmaler aus Nordfriesland. Nach einer Tischlerlehre u. autodidaktischen Versuchen studierte J. 1853-56 an der Kopenhagener Akademie bei V. N. Marstrand u. arbeitete anschließend als Maler in Friesland. Dank Unterstützung der preußischen Regierung konnte er 1867/68 nach Paris u. Rom reisen. 1871-75 war er in Hamburg tätig, bevor er endgültig nach Nordfriesland zurückkehrte. J. ist einer der Hauptmeister der Malerei Frieslands, dessen Bewohner er in vielen Facetten festgehalten hat.

Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
