Lyon, Gueynard 1508. (4), CCCXXXI, CCCXXXIIII-CCCXXXVI Bl. Blindgepr. Schweinsldr. über Holzdeckeln mit 2 Schließen.USTC 143333. - Early (but not the first) edition of Petrus de Natalibus' hagiography, Legends of the Saints (or, more literally, "Catalog of the Saints and Their Deeds"). Though his exact birth and death dates are unknown, he lived at the end of the 15th century and became the bishop of Equilio (today known as Jesolo). This book became a standard work of hagiography and was reprinted many times throughout the 16th century. Its popularity faded in the early 17th century and its reprinting ceased. The copy offered here was recut and rebound long after its publication; the originally much wider margins were cut to fit new, smaller boards, whereby many of the earlier marginalia were partially removed. The newer binding is undated, but it appears to be from the 18th century. - Incomplete: leaves 332-333 and 337-349 are missing. Former library book with inner stamps and spine sticker. Boards rubbed and somewhat soiled. Back board with light water damage. Upper spine with some worming. Binding firm, though worn and revealed at several spots, particularly both boards' gutters. Both pastedowns with signs of water damage. Largely age-typical darkening, though the inital and final leaves are especially stained and soiled, as are some inner leaves, especially around 162. Title page heavily worn and stained, somewhat torn, and bearing numerous marginalia indicating mid-17th-century ownership by one Valentinus Klee of Bischofsheim, a town near Frankfurt. Many pages bear markings and marginalia, including several additional markings of ownership by Valentinus Klee. Nearly every page bears red paint on the capitals and paragraph breaks, and some even have red-painted illustrations. Leaves 200 and 201 bear repairs near the binding. Text block well-preserved.
