Lot 103 | Neo-Futurism. 1913
Estimate value
£ 1 000 – 2 000
Second edition (the only edition recorded by MoMA) of this rare Futurist book including work by Gribatnikov, Grigoriev, Mikhelson, Semenov and others. ‘No survey of the impact of futurism on Russian society is complete without taking into consideration futurist forgeries and hoaxes... The best known of these literary frauds was Neofuturizm, published 1913 in Kazan. It is a big book of about 100 pages, and nearly a quarter of it is occupied by a manifesto 'Nemnogim, kotorye poimut nas' (To the few who will understand us), signed by A. Gribatnikov. In the manifesto the neofuturists divorce themselves from the rest of the avant-garde ("they are seeking - we have found"), but they do not reject it: Burliuk is accepted; Khlebnikov is called a genius’ (Markov, Russian Futurism, p. 221). MoMA 57.
Quarto (273 x 220mm); printed on variously coloured paper, with numerous illustrations (one or two minute marginal tears to title-page, minor stain to the outer edge of the first 3 ff., upper outer corners of first two quires creased, else very good). Original pictorial wrappers (spine partly perished, upper wrapper worn around the edges with small losses).
