Lot 2500 | NEW SPAIN Collection of 8 silver baptismal bowls, 17th-19th c.
NEUSPANIA Collection of 8 silver baptismal bowls, 17th-19th c. Baptismal bowls in various shell shapes. Most of the bowls come from Mexico, where this typical shell shape developed at the end of the 17th century: 1 bowl has a rolled, tubular handle (l. approx. 18 cm), 2 bowls have 2 small scroll shapes at the end (l. approx. 15.5-18.5), 1 bowl has a linear and a fishtail-like engraving on the underside of the handle (l. ca. 16.5), 2 bowls have handles (l. ca. 16.5-22), 1 bowl is very long and the silver sheet is slightly rolled at the end (l. ca. 28.5), 1 bowl has an almost round shape with a slight bend at the end (l. ca. 18). An exact dating is not possible due to the lack of hallmarking and the few surviving examples. Comparative examples can be found in the Museo Amparo in Puebla and have been described by Jesús Pérez Morera (see 'Por mano de ángeles cincelado', Puebla 2017), other shells can also be found in the Franz-Mayer-Museum in Mexico City. Weight 1550 g. Partially damaged, soldered, replaced, signs of age and use.
