Yellow diamonds are found in mines throughout the world. The color is caused by the substitution of nitrogen atoms for carbon atoms in the diamond crystal lattice and the intensity of the color is dependent upon the amount of nitrogen. This exchange causes the diamond to absorb blue light and selectively transmit yellow light. With a strong enough yellow hue, the diamond will exceed the D to Z color range and will be graded as ‘Fancy Yellow’. With increasing saturation, the diamonds will be graded as either Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense or the most saturated, Fancy Vivid.
