Lot 191 | Novye nachala geometrii s polnoi teoriei parallelnykh
Estimate value
$ 7 000 – 9 000
Extremely rare first edition, Russian journal issues from Lobachevsky's third major work of non-Euclidean geometry. Lobachevsky's first published work on this subject was O nachalakh geometrii (1829-30), and the present work was joined by Voobrazhaemaya geometriya (1835) and its sequel Primenenie voobrazhaemoi geometrii k nekotorym integralam (1836), see following lot. Together, they are Lobachevsky's oeuvre on the subject. The present set comprises the first four publications of six, it is without the two publications published in 1838. Three of the journals are in original wrappers, the fourth was rebound for Friedrich Engel, a German translator of Lobachevsky, and contains his notes. We trace no copies of any original Kazan issues of Nova nachala geometrii at auction. D. Sommerville, Bibliography of Non-Euclidean Geometry, p.26.
