Lincoln attempts to secure a post for diplomat James De Long, who had been posted first to Tangier and later at Aux Cayes, Haiti, It is said there may be a vacancy in the consulship at Callao [Peru], & if there shall be, and the Sec. of State is willing so am I, that Mr. De Long may have the place." De Long had made a name for himself in Tangier when he had arranged to have two Confederate officials arrested, much to the consternation of other European diplomats in the city. [With:] LINCOLN, Abraham. Endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln") as President, [Washington,] 17 December 1864. 1page, 86 x 63mm on a slip removed from a letter. Lincoln requests that "Tim S. McHenry" take the Oath of Dec 8 1863 and be discharged. Body of text in another hand with Lincoln writing the date. According to the Index of Compiled Confederate Military Service Records, McHenry was commissioned a captain in the 8th Tennessee on 15 May 1861.
