Beschädigung Rahmenbeschädigt ''So brachte er [Orpheus] es auch in der Musik so weit, daß er nicht nur die Menschen, sondern auch die wilden Thiere, ja selbst die Bäume und Felsen, nach sich gezogen, wie nicht weniger die Flüsse in ihrem Laufe, und die Winde in ihrem Blasen, aufgehalten. [...] Dieses alles bewirkte er mit seiner Leyer, oder Cithar, welche er vom Apollo empfangen [...] Er sang dazu, welches vorher noch niemand gethan hatte, da man nur auf der Flöte zu spielen pflegen.'' (Benjamin Hederich, Gründliches mythologisches Lexikon. Leipzig 1770, S. 1811). In einer dicht bewaldeten Landschaft, die links den Blick auf einen See freigibt, sitzt der als antiker Held gekleidete Orpheus mit seiner Harfe. Im Haar trägt er als ''poeta laureatus'' einen Lorbeerkranz, eine Gloriole hinterfängt seinen Kopf. Er ist umgeben von Vögeln und Tieren, ein Äffchen im Vordergrund begleitet - eine ikonographische Besonderheit - Orpheus mit den Klängen einer zu seiner Statur passenden Viola da braccio, die es wie eine Gambe hält. Vor allem im 17. Jahrhundert war das Thema des die Natur bezaubernden Orpheus bei Künstlern und Auftraggebern sehr beliebt. Bei vorliegendem Gemälde lassen sich Einflüsse verschiedener, sich mit vergleichbaren Darstellungen beschäftigender Künstler feststellen: die Komposition der Baumlandschaft als solcher erinnert stark an jene eines Jan Brueghel d. J., die dicht gedrängte Anordnung der Fauna ist ohne die Arbeiten eines Roelant Savery undenkbar. Die Gestalt des Orpheus wiederum ähnelt den antiken Heldengestalten im späteren Schaffen des Niederländers Joachim Wtewael. Schließlich geht die Darstellung der beiden Löwen rechts spiegelbildlich auf Peter Paul Rubens' berühmtes Gemälde ''Daniel in der Löwengrube'' (entstanden 1613-17) zurück. Die ornamentale Gestaltung der Harfe reflektiert den in den Niederlanden der Zeit Rembrandts beliebten Stil des ''Kwab'', eines höchst phantasiereichen Dekors, der sich durch frei organische, oft surreale Formen auszeichnet.
