A PAIR OF FINELY CAST AND DETAILED WORKED PAIR OF BRONZE VASES BY SUZUKI CHOKICHI (1848-1919) - Japan, signed to base Kako chu, Meiji period - Cast and finished with elaborate beaked beast handles with protruding tongues and set on multi-registered incorporated stands, the large panels decorated with birds of prey on pine and maple trees, the feathers and surface of the trees rendered in a naturalistic manner, the eyes in gold and shakudo and the reverse with swallows and a pheasant in flight, the remaining surface decorated with geometric lozenge patterns, key-frets and lappets, signed Kako chu on the underside. - Bavarian private property, bought at Bonhams New York, 14.9.2016, lot 221 One of the most celebrated monumental bronze casters of the Meiji era, from around 1900 Suzuki Chokichi seems to have worked at a less monumental scale and in a more refined manner, as here.
