Das Motiv der "hundert Hirsche" war in der chinesischen Kunst ab Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts sehr beliebt. Das Motiv der Hirsche hat eine lange Geschichte in der chinesischen Kunst, da es sich auf den Rebus bezieht, bei dem das chinesische Wort für "Hirsch" ein Homophon für "Verdienst" oder "Beamtengehalt" ist; die "hundert Hirsche" stehen daher für den ultimativen Erfolg, eine Karriere im Staatsdienst im kaiserlichen China. Die malerischen Szenen mit Hirschen in felsigen, baumbestandenen Landschaften sollten wahrscheinlich die Hirsche in den kaiserlichen Gärten und Jagdparks des Kaisers Qianlong (1736-1795) darstellen.
