Estimate value
€ 20 000 – 30 000
A VERY RARE AND LARGE PAIR OF LAC-BURGAUTÉ PORCELAIN VASES AND COVERS - China, Kangxi/ Qianlong period - This style of lacquer decoration with delicate mother-of-pearl inlays seems to have come into its own in the second half of the Kangxi period. Some examples show figures in landscape or garden scenes, and some are taken from woodcuts, as in the case of a square bowl exhibited in Hong Kong (illustrated in 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and Art Gallery, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1993, pp. 184-5, no. 96), the scene of which is taken from the Yuzhi Gengzhi tu (Imperial Edition of Pictures of Tilling and Weaving) printed in 1712. The present pair of vases with lids is very rare in this size. - Formerly from an old European private collection, acquired before 2007Compare a tea bowl and saucer illustrated in Oceano, no. 14, June 1993, p. 38, dated to the Qianlong period. Compare a vase without cover in this style, sold Christie's London, 17.6.2003, lot 66 - Part. rest.
