PAIR OF MAGNIFICENT SILVER CANDLESTICKS FROM THE LANDSBERG-VELEN SERVICE.

Date: 1792.
Maker/Designer: Andreas Emmel.
Technique: Silver.
Description: Ascending round foot with laurel wreath and pearl ornamentation. The finely engraved coat
of arms of the barons of Landsberg-Velen on the front of each foot. The shaft above a
fluted plinth merging into three slender pilasters with rams' heads, in their centre a
slender rod with tendril. Movable oak leaf festoons hung inbetween the rams' heads, the
large vase spout with fluted centre and widely protruding spout insert. The rim of the
drip plates leaf-shaped.
Weight: Ca. 1835g.
Measurement: Height each 32,5cm.
Mark: Inspection mark Bonn with number 1792 (Scheffler, Rhineland Westphalia no.164), maker's mark Andreas Emmel (working 1786-1820 ibid. no.176).

In 1792, Paul Joseph Freiherr von Landsberg-Velen commissioned a large dinner service from the Bonn silversmith Andreas Emmel consisting of over 300 pieces.
The large and heay candlesticks are two of a total of 12 copies that were executed by Emmel for the service in the 'à l'antique' style that was popular at the time (Fritz, p.370, 385).
The service, which has survived to a rare extent, can be considered as exceptional for its period of origin.
It is comparable to commissions such as that of the Elector Max Emmanuel, who had a service made for his son Clemens August in 1719 on the occasion of his appointment as Bishop of Münster and Paderborn.
"With the large services for Bavarian electors, Prussian kings, Russian tsars and the multitude of wealthy noble families, it is probably the last German dinner service to be executed to such an extent. " (Fritz, p.386).

Parts of the service are now in public collections such as the Landesmuseum Bonn or Münster.
