Straight, full blade with flat back and double-edged central point, the base with etched inscriptions "Vivat Ertz Hertzog Joseph" and "Regt á Chevall de Conte Caprara" as well as smith mark in the shape of an imperial orb. Gilt hilt of non-ferrous metal decorated in rich relief, knuckle guard with tendril décor, grip with brown leather cover and brass wire wrap. Brown leather scabbard with embossed vertical ridges on the obverse, brass fittings with rich relief on the reverse and four iron suspension rings. Blade pitted in parts, leather rubbed, fittings with pressure marks, slightly damaged in places, traces of age. Length 97 cm. Extremely rare officer’s weapon.
Count Lodovico Girolamo Caprara was the nephew of Ottavio Piccolomini. After the latter’s death in 1656, Count Caprara became the owner of the Cuirassier Regiment Alt-Piccolomini, from which later originated the Cuirassier Regiment K7 (Imperial and Royal Cuirassier Regiment von Schmertzing from 1745 until 1762), which continued the tradition of the Caprara cuirassiers.
The pallash at hand was displayed in the exhibition "Salzburger Kontingente im Dienste des Kaisers" (tr. "Salzburg military units in the service of the Emperor") at the Salzburg Museum of Military History in 2020.
