Lot 180 | Panorama von Athen, Munich, 1841, original boards
Estimate value
£ 10 000 – 15 000
Large oblong folio (582 x 698mm.), title, dedication, list of subscribers, 8pp. text, engraved map, 10 large plates each with printed tissue overlay, and 6 other lithographed views, publisher's cloth-backed lithographed grey boards, some damp-staining and spotting, some creasing and closed tears, binding worn
The ten large contiguous plates form a magnificent panoramic view of Athens as viewed from the Acropolis, which when joined together would measure 455 x 5800mm. The smaller view of the Acropolis, looking southeast, recalls that in Louis Dupré's Album grèc (c.1825). Stademann, a Bavarian, was a member of the regency which governed Greece during Otto I's minority (1832-1835), holding the office of Secretary of State. The production of the panorama was intended as a tribute to both Athens and Otto himself.
