Um 1626. Öl/Lw. 91,5 x 130 cm. Auf dem Keilrahmen alter Christie's-Blockstempel. Zustand Rest., doubl. Das Panorama mit Wald, Fluss und Landschaftsausblick zeigt den typischen Stil des Spätwerks von Bril. Neben seinem Sohn Cyriacus arbeiteten auch mehrere Künstler aus Flandern zeitweise in Brils Atelier in Rom. Von einem dieser Meister stammen möglicherweise die Figuren. - Gutachten: Luuk Pijl hat die Zuschreibung an Paul Bril und seine Werkstatt bestätigt. - B. war der einflußreichste flämische Landschaftsmaler des frühen 17. Jhs. Er war Schüler von D. Wortelmans in Antwerpen, bevor er um 1576 seinem Bruder Mathijs nach Rom folgte. Dort etablierte er sich zunächst als Maler von Fresken im Vatikan, bevor er begann, auch Tafelbiler zu schaffen. Unter seinen Auftraggebern waren drei Päpste und zahlreiche Kardinäle. Seine Bilder wurden auch nach Nordeuropa exportiert und fanden dort viele Käufer und Nachahmer; so ebnete Brils Stil für die klassische barocke Landschaftsmalerei eines Claude Lorrain.
