DUTCH/FLEMISH SCHOOL Master, active about 1700. PEDACIUS DIOSCORIDES Oil on oak panel. 25 x 18 cm (F. 31 x 24,5 cm). Inscribed in oval at top of front: 'PEDACIUS DIOSCORIDES'. Part. min. rubbed, slightly old retouching. Frame. Dioscorides was a Greek surgeon in the army of Emperor Nero. He was born in Asia Minor, around 40 AD. Later he joined the army of Emperor Nero, so he could study the local flora and fauna in different countries. During his military career he travelled through Italy, Greece, Spain and France and collected a large number of botanical, mineral and biological specimens. Everywhere he questioned the locals about the medicinal value and practical use of the specimens he collected. The data thus obtained formed the basis for his famous work of 'Materia Medica'. für sein berühmtes Werk der 'Materia Medica'. Provenance: Rhenish Private Collection.
