Lot 115 | Petrus von ROSENHEIM (1380?-1433).
Estimate value
£ 5 000 – 8 000
[Memorabiles Evangelistarum figurae.] Hexastichon Sebastiani Brant in memorabiles evangelistarum figuras. [Pforzheim:] Thomas Anshelm, 1502.
Second edition, issued in the same year as the first, of an early and rare mnemonic text. The striking imagery is based on the earlier blockbook editions of Ars Memorandi, with each allegorical representation of an Evangelist accompanied by instruments and symbols corresponding to events in the life of Christ as related in the Scripture. The verses are drawn from Petrus von Rosenheim’s Roseum memoriale, first published c.1480. ‘Some of the most curious images ever printed’ (R. Wieck, Ars memorandi: a facsimile of the text and woodcuts printed by Thomas Anselm at Pforzheim in 1502, Cambridge, MA, 1984). Thomas Anshelm, who introduced printing at Pforzheim in 1500, issued two editions of this work in 1502; the first has the first line of leaf a1 ending 'memorabi-', whereas the second edition (here) has the same line ending 'Sebastiani'. VD-16 P-1905; Brunet I: 499-500; Cf. Fairfax Murray German 43 (1503 edition).
Quarto (196 x 138mm). With final blank leaf, 15 large woodcuts, large woodcut initial. Dark chestnut morocco tooled in a Renaissance style by Thivet, spine lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (spine faintly sunned). Provenance: P. Desq (booklabel) – Ambroise Firmin-Didot (booklabel) – F. Soleil (bookplate) – Paul Harth (booklabel).
