Lot 2 | Pflaum's Kalendarium 1477-1552
Estimate value
$ 20 000 – 30 000
PFLAUM, Jakob (c.1450-1500). Kalendarium 1477-1552. Ulm: Johannes Zainer, 1478.

One of the earliest printed calendars, with illustrated eclipse tables, from the inventive printer Johannes Zainer. Honeyman copy. The text contains astronomical tables, tables of the latitudes of 35 European cities, a guide to upcoming eclipses, and astrological guidance on when to undertake various tasks. The final blank here has a manuscript astrological table neatly written on it. Pflaum compiled two other printed calendars, but in German, with Zainer around the same time. An ephemeral item, it is absent from many institutional libraries and rare at auction; RBH records only pre-1960s trade copies. BSB-Ink P-406; GW M32811; Klebs 758.1; Goff P-542; ISTC ip00542000. Exhibited: "The Heavens Revealed," Chapin Library, Williams College, 2003.

Chancery folio (310 x 207mm). 19 leaves [of 20, without initial blank]. Rubricated. Woodcut diagrams. One page of contemporary manuscript tabula on final leaf in red and brown ink. Modern vellum and marbled paper. Custom slipcase and chemise. Provenance: Robert Honeyman (his sale, Sotheby's Parke Bernet, 10 November 1980, lot 2471).
