Phillip Parker King (1791-1856) and Robert FitzRoy (1805-1865)
[South America Pilot.]Sailing Directions For South America. Part II. La Plata, Patagonia, Magellan Strait, Tierra Del Fuego, Falkland Islands, Staten Island, Chile, Bolivia, And Peru ... Third Edition. London: Hydrographic Office, Admiralty. 1851.
Very rare publication of the official Admiralty guide to South American waters surveyed by King and Fitzroy, with three Darwin references from the Beagle voyage: pp. 102, 280 and 374. The first states: 'In the N.W. corner of the Sound there is also a good harbour, called after Capt. Fitz-Roy's celebrated companion, Mr. Charles Darwin'; the other two refer respectively to Darwin Bay and Channel, and to Darwin Mount. The text refers to accompanying Admiralty chart sheets and plans, but it appears this text work was published separately.

The South America Pilot was to be composed of three parts, although this second part was the first to be published (first edition in 1848; second edition 1850); part I, East Coast, appeared in 1864, with part III, West Coast, only appearing much later in 1915.

Octavo (219 x 145mm). Pp. xii, 410, [ii]. Half-title (short marginal tears repaired to pp. vii-viii, pp.193-194 and 299-300, some very light variable soiling). Modern green half morocco, gilt spine, top edge gilt (extremities lightly rubbed).
