Trotz der auf die aufdoublierte Leinwand übertragenen Identifizierung der Dargestellten als M[adam]e R[ohan] Soubise, also offenbar Anne de Rohan-Chabot, Princesse de Soubise (1648-1709), handelt es sich mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit um ein Bildnis der Marquise de Montespan. Ein Vergleich der markanten Physiognomie mit folgenden zwei Gemälden, beide in Versailles, Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon, stützt diese Vermutung: Pierre Mignard (Kopie), Bildnis der Marquise de Montespan (Inv.-Nr. MV 6610, INV 6699, LP 6866) bzw. das Bildnis der Marquise von der Hand eines unbekannten Künstlers des dritten Viertels des 17. Jahrhunderts (Inv.-Nr. MV 4265, INV 9286, B 1896). Besonders das letztgenannte Porträt weist zahlreiche Übereinstimmungen hinsichtlich der Gesichtsform, des markanten Mundes, der leicht gewölbten Nase und des Schwunges der Augenbrauen auf.

Françoise de Rochechouart, Marquise de Montespan (1640 Lussac - 1707 Bourbon-lArchambault) war eine Mätresse des französischen Königs Ludwig XIV., des "Sonnenkönigs". In Anspielung auf die griechische Göttin Athene nannte sie sich "Athénaïs". Sie kam als Tochter eines Vertrauten König Ludwigs XIII., erstem Kammerherrn des Königs, zur Welt. Ihre Mutter war u. a. Ehrendame der Königin Anna von Österreich. Nach einer Erziehung im Konvent Ste. Marie in Saintes wurde sie bei Hofe eingeführt, wurde ihrerseits Ehrendame der Königin Marie-Thérèse. 1663 heiratete sie Louis-Henri de Pardaillan de Gondrin, Marquis de Montespan. 1674 wurde diese Ehe annulliert. Grund hierfür war die Rolle der Montespan bei Hofe: Sie hatte sich - offenbar nicht ohne Hintergedanken - mit Louise de La Vallière, der offiziellen Geliebten (Maîtresse royale an titre) des Königs angefreundet, die sie 1667 in dieser Funktion verdrängte. Die Montespan wird einerseits als schön, kultiviert und charmant beschrieben, andererseits warf man ihr Berechnung, Eigensucht und Gefühlskälte vor. Mit Ludwig XIV. hatte sie sieben Kinder, von denen sechs legitimiert wurden. Der Marquis de Montespan dagegen zelebrierte und kritisierte die Untreue seiner Frau in ungewöhnlichem Maße (so ließ er z. B. eine Totenmesse für ihre verlorene Seele lesen), aus taktischen Gründen blieb ihre "Vorgängerin" daher vorerst Maîtresse en titre. Der Marquis wurde schließlich nach Spanien verbannt und die Ehe 1674 annulliert. Der Stern der Montespan begann zu sinken, als der König seine Sympathie für andere Schönheiten des Hofes entdeckte und selbst hohe Vertreter der Kirche ihr Verhältnis mit dem König kritisierten. Schließlich wurde die Marquise als Oberintendentin des Haushalts der Königin "weggelobt", der Sonnenkönig hatte mittlerweile andere Favoritinnen. Später fiel sie, als ihre Verbindung mit einer "Hexerin" und Giftmischerin publik wurde, in Ungnade und zog sich 1691 in einen von ihr gestifteten Konvent zurück. Sie übte sich fortan in der Rolle der Büßerin, entschuldigte sich 1707 öffentlich für ihre Verfehlungen. Sie begab sich anschließend zur Kur nach Bourbon-lArchambault, wo sie am 27. Mai des Jahres verstarb.
