Lot 187 | PITTON DE TOURNEFORT, Joseph (1656-1708) - Relation d'un voyage du Levant fait par ordre du Roy. Lyon: Freres Bruyset, 1727.
Estimate value
€ 300 – 500
An elegant Lyonese edition whose rich illustration underline the curiosity and the encyclopedic spirit of the author. The work is acompanied by numerous engravings depicting people, customs, torture, fauna, botany, objects, views of cities, ships, maps and plants. The iconographic repertoire is particularly valuable for the small Greek and Turkish cities (Blackmer). "The botanist Pitton de Tournefort was sent on a mission to the Levant by Louis XIV in 1700. He travelled extensively in the Archipelago, visiting most of the islands in the Cyclades and many in the Northern Sporades. He also spent a considerable period in Crete before going to Constantinople and Asia Minor, the coasts of the Black Sea and then overland through Armenia to Persia" (Blackmer).
3 volumes, 8vo (189 x 121mm). Woodcut headpieces and initials, 151 engraved plates of which 6 folding (some browning, folding plate with the cave of Antiparos with a small clean tear, few other small tears, some non-invasive wormtracks and some dampstaining in vol. 3). Contemporary mottled calf, spines decorated in gilt, red edges (some light chipping and extremities lightly rubbed). The copy is apparently complete based on digital comparison with the copy of the Digital Library of the Real Jardín Botánico in Madrid, although SBN has a total of 153 plates and most of those on sale have 152.
