Further details
A QUEEN ANNE SILVER TRAY
MARK OF SAMUEL WASTELL, LONDON, 1703
Rectangular with cut corners and resting on four riveted bracket feet, engraved in centre with a coat-of-arms in foliate rococo cartouche with crest above, engraved underneath with scratch weight 138:15, fully marked underneath and on bracket feet
The arms are those of de Ligne of Harlaxton impaling Gregory of Nottingham.
Unusually, the crest appears to correspond to the arms on the right—that is, those of the wife—rather than to those of the husband. It is highly likely that the illustration was copied from a seal where the arms were reversed, with the husband’s arms appearing on the right instead of the left.
The Harlaxton estates came into the Gregory family through the marriage of Anne Orton (1713–1788) to Gregory Gregory Esq. (1696–1758) of Rempstone Hall, Nottinghamshire, in 1738. Anne was the great-granddaughter of Sir Daniel de Ligne Kt. (d. 1656).
