Lot 186 | Poèmes, Oscar Wilde's copy
Estimate value
$ 4 000 – 6 000
Lord Alfred Douglas, 1896
DOUGLAS, Lord Alfred (1870-1945). Poèmes. Paris: Mercure de France, 1896.
Oscar Wilde's own copy of the first edition of his lover's poetry, with his signature on the wrapper. Douglas published this first collection of his poems in France during Wilde's imprisonment—a direct result of a disastrous conflict with Douglas's father instigated by the younger man. This copy includes a midcentury exhibition slip from the Grolier Club, possibly related to the Douglas Hyde exhibition held 27 October–3 December, 1965.
Octavo. Printed in French with facing page English translation. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard (a bit toned throughout, occasional chips). Original printed wrappers (text block splitting, flyleaf detached, wrappers a bit toned and soiled with rear panel stained red, backstrip creased). Custom slipcase and chemise. Provenance: Oscar Wilde, 1854-1900 (ownership inscription on wrapper).
