Illuminated manuscript with two full-page miniatures in a very handsome relievo binding. The other Whittier poems in the manuscript are "The Witch's Daughter" and "Memories." The calligraphed certification leaf at end reads: "This manuscript … was designed, written out, and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski for Messrs. R. Rivière & Son, Bookbinders & Booksellers to his Majesty King George V. London. This manuscript will not be duplicated. This manuscript was executed by me," and is signed by Sangorski.



Quarto (258 x 192mm). Illuminated manuscript on vellum, 20 leaves, plus 5 blank vellum leaves, mounted on guards. Title in red with three illuminated initials (one letter with small smudge), full leafy border in purple, blue and burgundy incorporating a portrait of Whittier; full-page frontispiece depicting the Female Martyr signed in monogram and dated 1914; text on pp. 4-40 with 17 large illuminated initials, several with elaborate borders, other initials in colors with occasional penwork; full-page tailpiece depicting lovers in the wood with two lines of verse below from “Memories.”



Full crushed dark blue morocco relievo binding by Rivière, light brown doublures, citron silk flyleaves, all edges gilt. The upper cover with a recessed oval medallion containing a portrait of the Female Martyr in molded relief of colored leathers touched in paint, paneled with a double raised band of green and brown morocco gilt, the inner panel with floral border in molded relief of colored morocco poppy flowers, leaves and a rosary, the outer panel with gilt leaves and onlay in blue and pink morocco. The lower cover with identical frames and outer panel, the inside enclosing another frame of red morocco with a central cartouche depicting a black cat, a witch’s hat and a horseshoe all in molded color leathers on a finely gilt ground with raised decoration touched in silver, gilt and onlay floral border. Spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, a repeated gilt-decorated floral panel with onlays in the remaining; board edges with double-gilt rule. Doublures of light brown morocco with wide borders of onlaid morocco: purple flowers, green diapered gilt, and blue morocco dots, the flowers on fine gilt pointillé; citron moiré silk endleaves. Stamp-signed by Rivière on the upper doublure. Full morocco case lined in silk and velvet, metal clasps.

Provenance: Phoebe A.D. Boyle (her sale Anderson Galleries, 19-20 November 1923, lot 368) [sold to Gabriel Wells] – “Kolb Collection” (Louis Kolb Typed description laid in) – M.C. Gaines, 1894-1947, the comic book pioneer (bookplate).
