Post lot text POMPEO BATONI, SAINT ALOYSIUS GONZAGA, RED AND WHITE CHALK, INSCRIBED IN AN OVAL, SQUAREDThe Jesuit iconography of St Louis (Aloysius) Gonzaga (1568-1591), always depicted with Christ on a cross in his arms, alongside a skull and white lilies, symbolising his perpetual virginity, became recurrent from the time the Saint was recognised by the Catholic Church in 1621. This sanguine is a preparatory study for an oval oil on canvas executed around 1744 and now in a private collection (E.P. Bowron, Pompeo Batoni, A complete catalogue of his paintings, New Haven and London, 2016, I, no. 64).
