Portraits of Shakespeare

James Boaden, 1824

SHAKESPEARE – BOADEN, James. An Inquiry into the Authenticity of various Pictures and Prints, which, from the decease of the poet to our own times have been offered to the public as Portraits of Shakespeare. London: Robert Triphook, 1824.

A very fine Cosway binding with five portrait miniatures, all depicting likenesses of Shakespeare and all after the five engravings in the present work. The central portrait is the most authoritative one, from the Droeshout engraving made for the First Folio of 1623. The author of the present work, James Boaden, was the one who published the first alarm about the notorious Ireland forgeries of Shakespeare manuscripts in the 1790s.

Octavo (232 x 149mm). Half-title. Five engraved plates including frontispiece. Full red crushed levant morocco by Riviere and Son, covers with double gilt-rule borders, upper cover with large rectangular panel of interlocking gilt rules incorporating two sizes of a stylized four-petal flower tool, used as corner ornament and massed in four squares around the center, set with five hand-painted oval portrait miniatures on ivory, each glazed and with gilt-rule borders; board edges and turn-ins gilt-ruled, olive green silk linings, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, stamp-signed by the binders on upper turn-in; fleece-lined slipcase. Provenance: Christie’s New York, 5 December 1991, lot 425.
