A GROUP OF FOUR MONUMENTAL JANIFORM MARBLE BUSTS REPRESENTING JUPITER AND JUNO, BACCHUS AND ARIADNE, HERCULES AND DEIANIRA, DIANA AND APOLLO, PORTUGUESE, LATE 17TH OR 18TH CENTURY

Bifron or janiform busts are derived from representations of the god Janus, from Roman mythology. His iconography of two faces, one young and one old, embodies the dichotomy of past and future, and by extension complementary opposites. Our suite of busts features four mythical couples presented together: Juno and Jupiter, Bacchus and Ariadne, Hercules and Dejanira, and Diana and Apollo.

Inherited from antiquity, the use of this type of representation continued uninterrupted through the different periods of artistic creation. It was particularly popular during the Renaissance and the 17th century with each example taking on the stylistic traits typical of the period in which they were created, as in the case of our series of busts sculpted in herms.

Our group of busts was presented in the extraordinary gardens of the Quinta da Fidalga in Seixal, on the Tagus opposite Lisbon. The Quinta’s foundations date back to the 15th century and, much like in the nearby royal palace of Queluz, the arrangement of its gardens and monumental decorations demonstrate a marked interest in architecture and bosquets à la Française. It is also interesting to note that our busts are similar to those on pedestals on the east wing façades overlooking the garden of the Queluz palace.

According to the deeds, the estate came into the Gama family in 1567, but some believe that certain plots of land were part of the family's possessions as early as the end of the 15th century and that the explorer Paulo de Gama (c. 1465-1499) lived there because of the estate's proximity to the Tagus and the shipyards he frequented. It's a tempting hypothesis. His brother, the famous Vasco de Gama (c. 1460-1524), could also have been received here, but there are no sources to confirm this. Over the centuries, each generation carried out a number of improvements, including extensive ornamental and agricultural plantations and the installation of an ingenious hydraulic system. The Gama Lobo Salema family still owned the Quinta, also known as Quinta de Vale de Grou or Quinta de Vasco de Gama, in the 19th century.
