First[?] German edition, describing the first European colonizing campaign in India. Mindlin copy. This is a German translation of the account first published in November 1506 at Rome, see preceding lot. The introduction praises the Portuguese for bringing Christianity to heathen lands and states that the text was prepared by Pedro Alfonso Malheiro, Chaplain to the Cardinal Bishop of Oporto. The title page includes a striking woodcut, with early hand-coloring and an addition of a skirt to the nude female. Rare. Only five copies recorded in OCLC and none in the auction records of ABSA or RBH. VD16 ZV 12697.
Quarto (174 x 120mm). Large woodcut on title depicting two Indians flanking the arms of Portugal (very slightly shaved on outer margin, A3 very slightly shaved on lower margin). Morocco gilt by Rivière, edges gilt (front cover nearly detached). Provenance: few early notes and drawing on title – with Maggs Bros., Voyages and Travels. Part II, catalogue 644, 1937, no. 155 – José Mindlin, 1914-2010 (bookplate).
