Flache Silberschale, auf deren Innenseite in einem großen, durch eine doppelte Kreislinie und ein stilisiertes Blütenfries eingefasstem Bildfeld eine königliche Jagdszene in zum Teil deutlich hervortretendem Relief zu sehen ist. Der Großkönig auf prächtig geschmücktem Pferd in vollem Lauf nach rechts spannt freihändig seinen Bogen und zielt auf eine Gruppe von Widdern. Zwei bereits erlegte Tiere füllen die untere Bildhälfte. Zwei weitere Tiere, denen der König hinterherjagt, fliehen in vollem Lauf nach rechts. Als einziges Landschaftselement findet sich rechts unten ein klein dargestellter Hügel/Berg mit Bewuchs. Bei dem Dargestellten dürfte es sich aufgrund der Vierzinnenkrone und der Haartracht wohl um Shapur II. handeln, einen der bedeutendsten Sasanidenherrscher. Die Darstellung des Großkönigs und der Tiere in feinster, detailreicher Treib- und Ziselierarbeit mit Gravuren. Auf der flachen Rückseite aufgelöteter Standring. Höchst qualitätsvolle Arbeit eines sasanidischen Meisters. Durchmesser 23,2 cm. Gewicht 631,5 g. Derartige Teller bzw. Schalen wurden als Geschenke des Herrschers an verdiente Personen oder auch als diplomatische Geschenke an auswärtige Fürsten vergeben. Ikonographisch vergleichbare Schalen (mit Darstellung anderer Großkönige) finden sich z. B. im Metropolitan Museum, New York (acc. no. 34.33) oder – fragmentiert – in der Eremitage St. Petersburg. Shapur II. (ca. 309 – 379 n. Chr.) war der am längsten regierende Sasanidenherrscher und zählt zu den bedeutendsten Großkönigen dieser persischen Dynastie. Angeblich wurde er noch als ungeborenes Kind im Bauch seiner Mutter gekrönt und musste sich in jungen Jahren gegenüber räuberischen arabischen Stämmen bewähren, gegen die er hart und erfolgreich vorging. Der Tradition nach wurde er von den Arabern auch als (Arab.) Ḏu’l-Aktāf = „der, der die Schultern durchbohrt“ betitelt. Später war er unter anderem in langjährige Kämpfe mit den Römern, aber auch mit zentralasiatischen Hunnen verwickelt. Das Sujet der Königsjagd war in der sasanidischen Gesellschaft von außerordentlicher Bedeutung: Denn in der Jagd demonstrierte der Großkönig seine Geschicklichkeit, Ausdauer und physische Stärke im häufig nicht ungefährlichen Kampf gegen wilde Tiere (auch Löwen, Bären, etc.), Eigenschaften, die ihn auch als Heerführer prädestinierten.
