(verso Etikettfragment), seit 1977 ModemuseumAus einfacher Familie stammend und in Boston aufgewachsen, setzte der Amerikaner Maurice Prendergast bereits als Jugendlicher alles daran, nach Europa zu gelangen und in Paris an der Académie Julian ein Malereistudium zu absolvieren. Immer wieder zog es ihn später an die Wiege der modernen Kunst zurück. Im Jahr 1907 etwa verbrachte er ein paar Monate in Frankreich, zuerst in St. Malo, dann in Paris, wo er sich die aktuellen Ausstellungen ansah und die dort empfangenen Impulse in eigenen Bildern umzusetzen versuchte. Besonders die Parks mit ihrem heiteren Leben hatten es ihm angetan, begeistert schrieb er an einen FreunDurchmesser: ''Du müsstest den Jardin du Luxembourg jetzt sehen, alles ist in vollem Leben - die Musikgruppe spielt, die Kinder tollen herum und die Frauen plaudern, nähen und sticken. Ich sehe in jeder Richtung Bilder und ich bin verdammt froh, dass ich nicht in Le Havre geblieben bin.''Prendergasts Bild vom Park vor der Gartenfassade des Palais wird durch die mit Statuen und Blumenkübeln geschmückte, horizontale Marmorbrüstung in zwei Teile geteilt. Im unteren Bereich sehen wir die von Menschen bevölkerte Grünfläche, während der obere Teil die höher gelegene Terrasse mit der parallel verlaufenden Baumallee wiedergibt. Dem Vorbild von Spätimpressionisten wie Vallotton, Vuillard oder Bonnard folgend, löst der Maler die figürlichen Motive der Mütter und Dienstmädchen, welche ihre spielenden Kinder beaufsichtigen, im Geflecht kurzer Pinselstriche auf. Die hellen Pastelltöne im vorherrschenden Gelb-Grün-Kontrast fangen das Licht des Sommertags ein, während deren spontan-gestischer Auftrag den Eindruck lebhafter Bewegung vermittelt.Zurück in New York etablierte sich Maurice Prendergast mit seinen Impressionen aus Europa im Rahmen einer großen Ausstellung, die 1908 durch ganz Amerika tourte, als Vertreter einer neuen fortschrittlichen Künstlergeneration. Im Vergleich zu anderen Werken mit dem gleichen Motiv trieb er im ''Sommer im Park'' zugleich mit dem Verzicht auf perspektivische Tiefenräumlichkeit und anekdotische Details die Formauflösung weiter denn je in Richtung Abstraktion. Zugleich schuf er mit seinem atmosphärischen Stimmungsbild vom Alltags- und Freizeitleben gewissermaßen das Beispiel einer leichthändigen Aufhebung der Standesunterschiede, wie sie in Amerika beim Aufbruch in das neue Jahrhundert geschätzt wurde.
