Fritz Behn (1878 - 1970) - a bust of Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria, circa 1916
Cast iron, unsigned. Slightly rust-coated and porous. Mounted on a marble base. Height of bust 38 cm, overall height 43.5 cm, overall weight 12.6 kg.
The sculptor Fritz Behn studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Wilhelm von Rümann between 1898 and 1900, joined the Munich Secession, exhibited at the Biennale in Venice in 1905, 1907 and 1909 and travelled to the German East African colonies in 1907/08 and 1909/10. The animal sculptures created after his travels brought him international recognition. In 1910, he was appointed Royal Bavarian Professor for life by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. In 1911/12, he visited the sculptor Auguste Rodin during his study stay in Paris. After joining the war as a volunteer in 1914 he was redeployed to the headquarters of Crown Prince Rupprecht in the 6th Army due to his lung disease in March 1915 until his discharge in January 1916. This bust was allegedly created on the occasion of the appointment of Rupprecht to Field Marshal in August 1916 and was crafted in iron due to the scarcity of bronze.
Provenance: Acquired by the consignor directly from the estate of Fritz Behn, who died in Munich in 1970.
