Artist info: dt. Painter and graphic artist (1839 Bernau until 1924 Karlsruhe), first temporarily apprenticeship as a lithographer and parlor painters in Basel and watches sign makers in Furtwangen, in parallel, teaching painting and drawing studies, studied 1859-66 at the art school in Karlsruhe, Ludwig Des Coudres and Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, then briefly in Basel and Düsseldorf, 1868 stay in Paris, influenced by Gustave Courbet and the Barbizon school, 1870-76, in Munich, in 1874, first trip to Italy with a stay in Rome, in 1878 in Frankfurt am Main, 1899-1901 in Kronberg and member of the Kronberger painter colony connected by friendship and inspired by Arnold Böcklin, Wilhelm Leibl, Wilhelm Steinhausen, and Wilhelm Trübner, 1899 appointed Professor, 1899-1920 Director of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, source: Thieme-Becker and the Internet.
