Ps. Isidore of Seville

A bifolium from a Collectio Canonum Hispana, or a Compilation of Canons, in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum [Spain?, mid-12th century]

A large, imposing bifolium with an ornately decorated initial from a 12th-century compilation of Canons which included the Councils of Toledo.

455 x 345mm (the leaf). A bifolium, 53 lines in two columns written in a clear, handsome Carolingian minuscule of the 12th century, the text not consecutive, from Concilia Toletana 8.iii-xii: '[Nam quanto] frequentius illi noxia vetuerunt' to 'per divine sanctionis oracula capite positam deflemus'; and 9.xiv - 10.vi :'[insistente pontifice] inditionem proprie reducantur ecclesie' to 'gementesque cum Jeremie questibus [dicimus: Dissolutum est gaudium]', 12 initials in red or green, one large, 9-line decorated initial 'G' in red and green with scrolling vinework, heading added in an early medieval but later hand, rubrics in red and green (a little soiled and stained, the edges frayed).

From the 5th century to the 7th century, about thirty synods (Concilia Toletana) were held at Toledo. The earliest, directed against Priscillianism, assembled in 400. The text here is from the 8th, 9th and 10th synods, which took place in 653, 655 and 656 under the auspices of King Reccesuinth of Hispania. These synods were codified and became integral parts of various collections of canons, including the Excerpta or Collectio Canonum Hispana, so-called because it included canons of Gallican and Spanish councils, and papal decretals mostly addressed to Spanish bishops. In the 9th century it was erroneously attributed to Isidore of Seville. The Toledan Councils were transmitted in canonical collections of the 7th through 9th centuries, set in stone by the Decretum. Several compilations incorporated these Councils, including, among others, the Collectio Hispana, Collectio Hispana systematica, Pseudo-Isidorian Decretals, De fugiendis contagiis Iudeorum, and Regino of Prüm’s De synodalibus causis.
