£ 2 000 – 3 000
Fragment from Opus imperfectum in Matthaeum in Latin, manuscript on vellum [Italy, 12th century].
A handsome example of the kind of highly-legible script emulated three centuries later by the Italian Humanists.
c.245 × 335mm. The upper part of a leaf preserving 24 lines of 2 columns, written in a regular late Caroline minuscule, the text comprising Homilies 35 and 36 from Ps-Chrysostomus’s Opus imperfectum in Matthaeum (‘ubi sit verbum veritatis […] quia ex operibus et’), the scribe having omitted the second half of Homily 35, after ‘[ad diem resurrec]tionis [ip]sius’ (recovered from use as a binding cover, with consequent folds, stains, etc., all margins cropped with loss of text).
