Lot 45 | RARE MARTIAN WITNESSED FALL FROM 28 JUNE 1911
Estimate value
£ 10 000 – 15 000
The fragment, from specimen BM1911.370, displaying extraordinary glassy fusion crust to one face; with original museum label from the British Museum Collection in London.

Martian meteorites are often referred to in the scientific literature as SNCs (after the type specimens Shergotty, Nakhla and Chassigny — cities in India, Egypt and France, where these meteorites were seen to fall). About 0.5% of meteorites are from Mars and only 0.04% of known meteorites are nakhlites. Nakhla is extremely difficult to acquire in any size.

Christie's would like to thank Dr. Alan E. Rubin at the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles for his assistance in preparing this catalogue.
