Collection of letters, postcards, scripts, essays and poems addressed to René and Georgette Magritte, c.1936 - 1974
Approximately 350 items in all, various sizes (from 75 x 125mm to 560 x 445mm). Provenance: Sotheby's, The Remaining Contents of the Studio of René Magritte: The Property of the late Georgette Berger, the widow of René Magritte, 2 July 1987, lot 965.

‘This is not an apple … ceci n’est pas un Magritte'. Magritte’s international network of artists, writers, dealers, friends, students and admirers write to him on a dazzling array of topics.

The correspondents include Yves Tanguy (on headed paper of ‘Gradiva’ about a plan to re-issue the Chants de Maldoror), Pierre-Louis Flouquet (long illustrated letter), Gui Rosey (typescript poem, and typescript of ‘Divigations d’un amant maladroit’, presumably a draft of his essay in the catalogue of the Magritte exhibition held at the Galerie Iiolas in 1967), Claude Spaak (two typed letters signed, New York, 1965, about the transport of a painting to New York), Joë Bousquet (incomplete letter), Pierre Bourgeois (postcard, 1964), Paul Delvaux (two posters, inscribed), Herbert Read (autograph letter signed, 1936), George Melly, Maurice Rapin, Käte Perls, Harry Torczyner, Gomez-Correa, Rudolf Zwirner, Marcel Lecomte (essay on Magritte), Paul Neuhuys (poems), Charles de Coster (postcard), Mary Kyle Christensen (typed letter signed), André Bosmans (poems), Dr Max Hodann (transcript of his PhD thesis), Patrick Hughs, Yvonne and Guy Rosey, Paul Delvaux, Nellens, Daniel Frasnay, Alain Jouffroy (poems), Louise de Vilmorin, Georges Bataille, Suzi Gablik, Volker Kahmen, Jean Wahl, Gaston Puel, Léo Malet, Peggy Guggenheim (postcard), Georges Hugnet (about Dada), Robret Guiette (letter and poem), Fernand Alquié (three), André Pieyre de Mandiargues (poem), Michel Foucault, Albert Delerry, Noël Arnaud, Franz Hellens, Simone Swan, Paul Simon, Philippe Soupault, Alain Robbe-Grillet, the Belgian consul in New York, the Director of the Carnegie Institute, representatives of art galleries and artistic societies including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago) and others, with receipts for the loan of work to exhibitions and copies of invoices to Magritte.
